Instant Replay
13 Nov 2014—29 Nov 2014

Instant Replay subjects the scoreboard of Waverley Park (aka VFL Park). The video scoreboard was installed in 1982, and forgotten by the public after the oval become defunct in 2002. It was the first video scoreboard to feature in an Australian sport venue. The scoreboard revolutionised the narrative of the game and the match-day experience, in addition to introducing highlighted live simulcasts of gameplay, extended score calculation, and action replays.

This installation explores the instant replay technique on the scoreboard. The instant replay is a kind of flashback, it is foregrounded in the idea of seeing again or of recognising the familiar in the new – a way of spatialising time-based events and allowing the viewer to derive the meaning of an event without having lived the experience. The installation is reconstituted through constructed sculptures and splicing and the assemblage of archive materials disseminated across the space, interconnect piece-by-piece like the instant replay.
