CAMILLE LADDAWAN
Steam In My Mouth
13 July 2023—30 Jul 2023
Opening:
Saturday 15th July, 4 - 6 PM
Through a series of etchings and beaded works, Camille Laddawan draws on various realms of feeling and articulation that come with harbouring an unborn. From spoken language to medical imaging to the bodily transference of messages via cravings, Steam in my Mouth explores the questions — How does one sense the unborn? How is a relationship formed? How do parents-becoming glimpse the ungraspable, future-bound state of an unknown other, as this person-becoming unfolds and interrupts from within?
Beaded works reference the medical imaging of ultrasounds, and are embedded via Tone Code with messages received from the foetus in the form of cravings. Namely, for anything ‘hot, boiling or scorching’. A series of etchings use the technique of Asemic writing to explore pre-language states of expression.
