FIONA MACDONALD: A CONCEPTUAL RETROSPECTIVE

“For Fiona’s show at West Space last year called Opening Act (2016), my role was to perform the curator. As curator I pretended to listen to an artist who was pretending to talk deeply about an artwork (ie: moving their lips without saying anything). In turn I feigned engagement, by raising an eyebrow, crossing my arms and nodding in agreement.”

Fiona Macdonald: A Conceptual Retrospective is both a homage and experimental exhibition of Fiona Macdonald’s work curated by Georgina Criddle. Drawing from Macdonald’s archive from 1986 to the present, this changing program of reconstructed photographic works, film and text works will evolve thematically from week to week. The exhibition will revisit artworks such as Black Square, which was produced in 1998 and has been destroyed especially for this show; Glade, which was first exhibited at ACCA in 1994 and removed after five days, and then in 2003 re-exhibited in the storeroom of ACCA because it was deemed too controversial for public viewing; Bone, which was inspired by a transcript from a Paris Hilton sex video, and Museum Emotions — shown here for the first time in its pirated version — which is renowned for transforming the Melbourne art world into a soap opera over 9 episodes in 2003. Offering an incisive and often humorous view from behind the scenes of artistic production as well as a feel for the seemingly endless retouching of works which characterises her long-term practice, the exhibition Fiona Macdonald: A Conceptual Retrospective will explore the unfinished and constantly renegotiated nature of Macdonald’s approach to making and thinking.

Fiona Macdonald is an artist based in Narrm/Melbourne. Her work has been screened, exhibited and published nationally and internationally since 1985. Macdonald’s art practice engages performative and remediated processes, institutional interventions, serialised film and video projects, and collaborative writing. She is the coordinator of the Fine Arts Honours studio program and the Graduate Coursework program at Monash University. Recent exhibitions include In Treatment, West Space, Melbourne (2017), Opening Act, West Space, Melbourne (2016), Means as Means, Margaret Lawrence Gallery, (2014), AUSTRALIAN STUDIES, (with Spiros Panigirakis) X Art Projects, (2014), Appointments, Sarah Scout (2012). She has also held solo exhibitions and screenings at ACMI (Melbourne 2003), MCA, (Sydney 2004), CLUBSproject Inc. (2005), Light Projects (2010 and 2011), Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (1998), ACCA (1990 and 1994), Gertrude Contemporary Artspaces and IMA Brisbane (1988).

These exhibitions are part of TCB’s Prolegomenon series supported by the City of Melbourne’s Arts Grants Program, Creative Victoria and Hells Kitchen, which encourages intergenerational exchange between emerging and established artists.
