GEOFF NEWTON
BIG TIME
02 Aug 2012—18 Aug 2012
Big Time is Geoff Newton’s 13th solo exhibition.
Newton’s new suite of paintings playfully grapple with the ‘big themes’ in genre painting as a vehicle for navigating his psyche.
Comprising of large-scale works in acrylic, oil and enamel, Big Time raises questions of the relevance of contemporary painting, the struggle of ‘the artist’ and his relationship to The Market, as Newton is also Director of Neon Parc, a commercial gallery in Melbourne.
Taking cues from the work and energy of his friend and fellow artist / dealer, the late Blair Trethowan, this new body of work is at once a personal homage and tribute to the spirit of the co-director of the now defunct yet influential Uplands Gallery, which closed in 2011
The exhibition also marks ten years between exhibitions at TCB, whereupon the artist first exhibited after relocating from Canberra in 2002.
Geoff Newton has been exhibiting in commercial and artist run spaces since 1999. Recent exhibitions include Geoff Newton / Kate Smith, Sutton project space, 2011, French Dressing, The Physics Room, Christchurch and Studio Tan, Gertude Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne, 2010. His work is held in private and corporate collections in Australia and overseas.
