GREG HODGE
Monsoon Crossing
25 Jan 2012—11 Feb 2012
Monsoon Crossing is an exhibition of new paintings by Sydney based artist Gregory Hodge. This new body of work extends on his recent working methodologies of constructing abstract compositions using painted motifs, drafting film and transparencies then rendering these collages in paint. The painting process translates the ephemeral and volatile nature of these collages in an explicitly fixed state. These ‘trompe l’oeil’ effects while used to reference the processes in which these works are constructed are also devices that question the implication of space and illusion within the work.
Manipulating the layers of transparency and opacity along with the relationship between the atmospheric spaces and painted abstract motifs evoke a dialogue with landscape and architecture. The work that makes up Monsoon Crossing engages with the visual poetics of abstraction whilst simultaneously resonating with the visionary atmospherics of the Romantic picture space.
Gregory Hodge has exhibited in Australia and overseas holding solo exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. Recent exhibitions include Universe at Blindside Gallery in Melbourne and Introduction held at Basso-Berlin Germany.
