MATTHEW GREAVES
ipso oops
08 Jun 2011—25 Jun 2011

The video and sculptural works in ipso oops wryly explore the difference between the logical force and the material effect of an argument. A looped video of a vinyl chair free-falling from 14000 feet, a video in which a boom microphone falls into a swimming pool and relays the sounds of its ruin to a camera, and surfaces stickered with pictures of Mali the baby elephant form a semblance of historic inferences pantomimically and grotesquely carried to some practical extreme.

Matthew Greaves is an Australian born artist currently living and working in Melbourne. He employs readymades and performance in his low-tech sculptures, videos and photography. His crudely Cynic inquiries into the half-truths of science/myth make use of unmethodical experiments and fallacious provocations in a sort of prop comedy to arouse an ambivalent sense of dogma in force. Recent solo exhibitions include der at Seventh Gallery 2010, Or at Platform Artists Group Inc. 2009 and an and at George Paton Gallery. Recent Group exhibitions include Busy, busy at TCB artinc. 2010.
