Melbourne 2nd, Lithuanian 1st
Is a reflection on memory, tradition and process.
Pippa Lukaitis is a Lithuanian-Australian photographic artist that uses traditional methods of photography and archival materials. She aims to reaffirm & reconnect to her own Lithuanian heritage through photographic documentation of traditional Baltic processes and specialised practises.
‘Melbourne 2nd, Lithuanian 1st’ focuses on Pippa’s fathers continuation of traditional Lithuanian ‘Cross-Crafting’ through his process of stone carving.
Directly contrasting between past and present through analogue photography and traditional processes like stone carving, Pippa compares her fathers practise onto that of her own. This forms shared commonalities and a critical sense of connection to her ancestors and their lives through these continued practises. Therefor allowing observations to be constructed on how tradition evolves and how it ultimately becomes one of few practices that can withstand the test of time.
